Cost based optimizer

After reading "High Performance MySQL", at least, I discovered the MySQL query optimizer is a cost based one, with a lot of frustrating exceptions, as everything it seems to be in this damn "RDBMS".

I was unable to find official documentation on this point and no "MySQL DBA" was able to answer me when I asked for.

I'm updating my knowledge on MySQL only because there more jobs than PostgreSQL but I think I'll go back on Oracle that is stronger, the DBAs are strong skilled and the whole thing is a real RDBMS.
